Our male English Golden, "Dusty," is innately a social butterfly. When we took him to dog parks as a growing puppy, he would literally go up to almost every person possible, to receive pets. We soon realized that although he loved playing with other dogs, he was just as, if not more excited about befriending people!* Now full-grown, Dusty still charms people with his bubbly enthusiasm, fun-to-pet broad, smooth head, cheerful smiles, wagging tail, and large beautiful black eyes. He is excellent at making eye contact and he sometimes amuses us with his side glances or innocent blinks! At group training, he entertained everyone during heeling exercises because he sometimes heeled with such contained excitement that he pranced like a pony! When in off training mode, Dusty loves to fetch ball and squeaky toys, play tug-of-war with ropes, and jumps eagerly into "Place!" on his pet cot to be brushed and adored. *Note: We have since learned that socializing our dogs at group dog training classes is far safer than dog parks and dog beaches whether there are sometimes unleashed and untrained dogs with unpredictable aggressive behaviors.

DOB: December 24, 2021

Gender: female

Our female English Golden Retriever, "Willow," is a white smooth-coated beauty, sweet and affectionate, and quite food-driven! She carries herself with grace and poise, except when she gets excited by food, other dogs being walked by in the neighborhood, or small wildlife passing through our backyard. Her "retriever" instinct then wants to leap into action, but she is readily corrected with a command - especially of rewarded with a food treat! At home, Willow amuses us whenever she picks up and brings to us her empty stainless steel feeding bowl...as if to say, "Please feed me (again)!" Willow is a super-learner - she is attentive and learns new commands readily with precision. Her "Down!" is fast, her "Sit!" is fast, her "Come!" is fast, her "Stand!" is a quick stand, her "Watch!" is focused, her "Heel!" is intentful. Don't tell Dusty - he presents excellently on his commands when fully focused...but Willow quietly beat him to earning an AKC Obedience CD title at only 14 months old! At home, Willow readily takes on a tug-of-war challenge with Dusty and sometimes wins. Unlike Dusty, she has a more independent nature and doesn't mind moments of solitude. On sunny days, Willow loves to "bask" outdoors in relaxing sunshine. She soaks in the warmth as she sits or lies down by our front gate an studies the neighborhood views. She often looks so pensive that she makes us wonder what she's thinking deep down inside! But when we approach her, she readily thumps her long tail to show us her affection and that she is pleased by our presence.

What started off as basic obedience training classes for our English Golden Retrievers ultimately grew into a fun family passion: advanced dog obedience and agility training. There is something pleasureable and rewarding about having dogs that are not only beautiful but also so receptive to obeying commands in return for verbal praise and treats. We soon devote ourselves to bi-weekly advanced obedience classes and frequent home practice sessions, some mixed in with feeding times. After only watching at first, our teenage daughters gradually caught on to the dog training passion. They eventually both became the primary trainers of our English Goldens. Then, to our content, they courageously stepped up as our dog handlers for AKC obedience competitions. They (nervously) led both of our English Goldens in many obedience show competitions. Progressively, our English Goldens achieved AKC titles for CGC (Canine Good Citizen), TKN (Trick Dog Novice), and CGCA (Canine Good Citizen Advanced). Then their biggest-days-yet came when they earned their official AKC obedience CD (Companion Dog) titles, even winning 1st and 2nd places in some shows. We were very happy, because they had both achieved hard-earned official AKC Obedience CD titles by one to two years of age. It was an exciting journey to AKC Obedience CDs for the dogs and especially for all of us as a family!
